Default support for SMTP, HTTP, and FTP ensures protection for the key Web and Internet email traffic protocols. Filters traffic coming into and out of the company or, in companies using Microsoft ISA Server internally, between company departments.
Best-of-breed anti-virus protection
McAfee SecurityShield utilizes the award-winning McAfee anti-virus scan engine, which stops every type of virus and malicious code threat, including “traditional” viruses, email worms, Internet worms, DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attacks, backdoor and remote access Trojans, and zombies. SecurityShield can automatically repair, block or quarantine infected traffic, preventing malicious code from entering or leaving the organization via SMTP, HTTP, or FTP.
Advanced content filtering
McAfee SecurityShield offers rules-based lexical scanning of more than 300 email attachment types, including Adobe® Acrobat and Microsoft Office formats. The preset rules can be customized according the organization’s needs for even greater filtering capability.
In addition, administrators can be alerted when email or attachments contain sensitive or offensive information that might put the company at risk, while true file-attachment type identifications prevent common rule evasion.
Automatic Outbreak Manager
Outbreak Manager proactively looks 24x7 for suspicious email behavioral patterns that could be indicative of a new virus outbreak, and implements an automatic response to the outbreak situation as defined by the administrator. Outbreak Manager performs essential outbreak prevention tasks such as initiating emergency DAT file updates, increasing scan settings, forcing heuristic analysis, blocking specific file types, and more.
Centralized management with ePolicy Orchestrator
SecurityShield includes the centralized management console that can do it all: ePolicy Orchestrator. With ePO, administrators can define and deploy policies, generate detailed graphical reports to monitor the effectiveness of their SecurityShield deployment, and gather a bird’s eye view of all other McAfee solutions at work.
SpamKiller for SecurityShield
McAfee SpamKiller® can be fully integrated into SecurityShield for more powerful anti-spam functionality. Utilizing an extensive rule set, the McAfee SpamKiller scoring system runs literally hundreds of rules against each email. Rules have a negative or positive score, with negative denoting legitimate email and positive indicating unsolicited email or spam. This highly effective technology catches up to 95% of all spam email, with a very low false-positive rate of less than 0.5%, right out of the box.
Policy-based control with eXtended Policy Support
SecurityShield provides organizations with policy controls for anti-virus, content, and spam filtering rules. Providing administrators the ability to set specific filtering rules for individuals or groups of users across multiple scan types ensures greater scanning and configuration flexibility.

Virus protection is only as good as its last update. SecurityShield automatically updates spam rules and virus definitions and engines, ensuring that your systems are always up-to-date and always protected.
Anti-phishing
SpamKiller includes specific rules that help to identify phishing attacks by looking for certain phishing-specific characteristics that can be present in e-mail. Once triggered, these rules are automatically assigned an overall spam rating by SpamKiller, which results, in most cases, with the messages being blocked. Together with the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG), McAfee has compiled a thorough database of phishing attacks and uses the knowledge from these attacks to create effective filtering rules.
